A journey into nature: from Amsterdam to the Veluwe
This exclusive tour takes you from Amsterdam to the Kröller-Müller Museum, located in the heart of National Park De Hoge Veluwe. The journey takes approximately 1.5 hours each way. While en route, you’ll notice a gradual transition from the vibrant city to one of the most tranquil landscapes in the Netherlands.
As you leave Amsterdam behind, the scenery slowly changes. Forests and open spaces begin to appear. As a result, the tone of the day shifts from crowd to calm.
The Kröller-Müller Museum and its collection
The museum is internationally renowned for its’ exceptional collection, with a particular focus on Vincent van Gogh. In fact, it holds the second-largest Van Gogh collection in the world. It owns nearly 90 paintings by Van Gogh. A carefully curated selection of these works is on display in the galleries. This way, visitors gain a rich overview of his artistic development.
The museum owes its existence to Helene Kröller-Müller. She was an early and visionary collector. In the early 20th century, she assembled one of Europe’s most important private art collections. With guidance from her advisor H.P. Bremmer, she developed a deep appreciation for modern art. In particular she admired the work of Van Gogh — long before he gained the global recognition he enjoys today.
Her ambition was not only to collect art. Moreover, she wanted to create a place where art, architecture and nature would exist in harmony. This vision led to the establishment of the museum within what is now National Park De Hoge Veluwe.
Today, the building, designed by architect Henry van de Velde, reflects this philosophy, allowing the art and the surrounding landscape to take center stage.
In addition to Vincent van Gogh, the museum features works by artists such as Monet, Seurat and Picasso. It also includes an impressive collection of modern and contemporary art.
A unique sculpture garden
A major highlight of a visit is the sculpture garden, one of the largest in Europe. Here, art and nature come together in a remarkable way. There are works by artists such as, among others, Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth. These are placed throughout a carefully designed landscape.
As you walk through the garden, the experience changes completely compared to the galleries, allowing you to engage with art in open and reflective atmosphere.
Special highlight: Van Gogh exhibition (temporary)
From September 15 2026 to January 3 2027, the Kröller-Müller Museum hosts an exceptional Van Gogh exhibition. It features 87 paintings.
During this period, the museum brings together its complete Van Gogh collection. This is extremely rare— in fact, it has not been seen since 1984.
While Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum is world-famous, it can be busy and fully booked. The Kröller-Müller exhibition offers a unique opportunity to experience his work in a quieter and more spacious setting than is typically possible in Amsterdam.
Cycling through De Hoge Veluwe (optional)
Do you wish to explore beyond the museum? There is the option to discover the national park by bicycle. The park is known for its well-maintained cycling paths and diverse landscapes, making it an ideal setting for a relaxed ride.
Cycling here offers a unique Dutch experience. In addition, it provides an opportunity to fully appreciate the scale and beauty of the Veluwe.
Why visit the Kröller-Müller Museum?
The museum offers a rare combination of artistic significance and natural beauty. Unlike the major museums in Amsterdam, visiting here is not just about the artworks themselves, but also about the setting in which they are experienced.
World War II history: Arnhem and Operation Market Garden
A short drive from De Hoge Veluwe lies Arnhem. This city played a key role during Operation Market Garden — one of the most ambitious Allied operations of World War II. The Battle of Arnhem, as it became known, was a pivotal moment in September 1944. It remains an important chapter in both Dutch and international history.
Today, visitors can explore this history at sites such as the Airborne Museum Hartenstein, located in the former Allied headquarters. You can also visit the nearby John Frost Bridge — famously referred to as “a bridge too far.”
For those with an interest in history, this can be a meaningful addition to the day. Please note that including Arnhem will extend the duration of the tour. We are happy to tailor the itinerary to your interests.
