From the city streets to the masters canvases
Step into a walking tour through the Golden Age. The streets of Amsterdam become the gateway to the masterpieces you’ll later encounter inside the Rijksmuseum.
We begin in the historic heart of the city. This is the area where trade, craftmanship and civic life once shaped Amsterdam into one of the wealthies cities in the world. You’ll discover how daily life in the 17th century inspired some of the most famous paintings ever created.
As we wander towards the Rijksmuseum, the city gradually reveals the stories behind the art. Near the Nieuwmarkt, for instance, we will introduce the world of surgeons, merchants and craftsmen who contributed to the development of the city. Here, the city’s surgeons once gathered for public dissections — a spectacle immortalized in Rembrandt’s The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Tulp. Although this painting now hangs in The Hague, the stories of innovation and commerce still echo in the surrounding streets.
Further along the route, in the Staalstraat, you’ll stand in the neighborhood where the powerful textile trade once ruled. This very street is the backdrop of Rembrandt’s The Sampling Officials (or The Syndics), a portrait of the textile guild’s leaders. These men were responsible for inspecting the quality of cloth produced and sold throughout the city. Still today, you can imagine the prosperity these merchants enjoyed during Amsterdam’s Golden Age.
Continuing our route, we pass by the site where Rembrandt painted The Night Watch, a commission for a local civic guard company. At this point, we’ll explain how Amsterdam’s civic guard companies operated and why Rembrandt’s dramatic portrayal of these soldiers changed the tradition of portrait painting forever. At the same time, you’ll gain insight into the social world behind the masterpieces: bustling markets, global trade routes, wealthy regents and the rapid expansion of the city itself.
Beyond the famous names and paintings, this tour offers a vivid introduction of everyday life in the 1600’s. Consequently, by the time you reach the Rijksmuseum, you’ll have stepped into the world of the Dutch Masters – ready to see it all reflected in their paintings.
Exploring the Rijksmuseum
Next, we continue our journey inside the Rijksmuseum. After a short break upon arrival, you step into the home of the greatest masterpieces of the Dutch Golden Age. Once inside, as you move through the galleries, you’ll immediately recognize scenes from the streets you just walked.
For example, stand before The Night Watch and recall the very place where it was created. Likewise, as you look at The Sampling Officials, you can imagine the textile guild’s headquarters in the Staalstraat. Meanwhile, Vermeer’s tranquil interiors show a different side of society, with quiet moments of everyday life.
Throughout the museum visit, your guide connects the artworks to the places, people and events you encountered earlier in the city. Rather than viewing the paintings in isolation, they become part of Amsterdam’s living history. The result is a richer, more immersive understanding of the Dutch Masters and the remarkable world that inspired them.
