What our guests say about this tour

"Fun and educational"

5/5

Hanneke guided us through in a sequential way so as we learned about the paintings we also learned about Van Gogh’s life journey. My oldest daughter said this was one of the favorite things we did in Amsterdam.

"Great ladies and great guides!"

5/5

We met up with Hanneke for a 2 hours private tour of the Van Gogh museum, a must see in itself. Hanneke, who is an art historian herself, made this visit even more interesting. I’m not the usual art museum client and I loved my visit of this museum and the art work of the great artist behind it.

About the tour

Was Vincent van Gogh a genius or a madman? Take this captivating private tour of the Van Gogh museum to find out.

Most people are familiar with van Gogh’s tragic life story – his misery, his insanity, his cut-off ear. Together, we will demystify the legend of this iconic yet enigmatic artist.

The story of van Gogh’s tumultuous life unfolds as you admire his famous paintings in living colour. In two hours, we survey the highlights of the museum collection: self-portraits, Potato Eaters, Sunflowers, The Bedroom, Almond Blossom, Wheatfield with Crows, and other important works.

Vincent van Gogh’s style and artistic evolution

We take you through Vincent’s entire career. We examine his early works in the Netherlands and his later paintings in France. In Paris, he painted impressionist landscapes and portraits. His works from Arles, Saint-Rémy and Auvers-sur-Oise reflect his post-impressionist evolution.

How did a mediocre craftsman turn into a pioneer of bold self-expression? Van Gogh’s artistic journey is unique. As a self-taught artist, he worked hard to master his brush.

We will look at his influences and experiments that nurtured this transformation. We will discuss Vincent’s scientific approach to colours and examine his innovative techniques. We will also talk about the struggles he underwent to develop his distinctive style.

Van Gogh’s life and legacy

“Artworks of flesh and blood”. These words of Emile Zola, van Gogh’s favorite writer, could apply to Vincent’s own paintings.

Van Gogh’s artistic career was very short – only 10 years. His legend as a tortured artist often overshadows his work. During our tour, we explore the background of his iconic and lesser-known masterpieces.

We talk about Vincent’s family, professional failures, religious quest, and love life. We reconstruct his journey beyond the sensational highlights – mental illness, self-mutilation, and suicide.

We also discuss why Van Gogh is considered the greatest Dutch painter after Rembrandt van Rijn. His work built on the legacy of old masters. It also continued the experiments of the Impressionists and the Realists. Yet it is unlike anything that came before him. Vincent’s work had a profound impact on the European art throughout the 20th century. He continues to fascinate people today and to shape our very idea of art.

The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam: the world’s largest collection of Vincent’s works

The Van Gogh museum holds a unique collection of Vincent’s works. It includes about 200 paintings and more than 500 drawings. It also boasts a rich collection of letters and artefacts. It is a visual account of his entire life, from his childhood to his premature death.

The museum was founded by van Gogh’s nephew, Vincent Willem, the son of Theo van Gogh. Vincent’s iconic painting Almond Blossom was a present to him as a newborn.

Our private tour of Van Gogh Museum is led by a professional art historian guide. This intimate, conversational experience helps you build a meaningful connection to the artist.
